CAPTURED BATTLE DAMAGED 1860 NAVAL CUTLASS, SAILORS CREEK,37
th
. MASSACHUSETTS RFEGT. APRIL 6, 1865
I am selling my collection of identified swords & weapons, this is one of them. This battle damaged 1860 naval cutlass was captured from a wounded Confederate Navy sailor of the Tucker Naval Brigade at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865 by Quarter Master Sergeant Thomas Porter, Jr. He was a Quarter Master Sergeant on the staff of the 37
th
Massachusetts Infantry Regiment at the battle. This cutlass is 32” long with a 26” blade, brass guard & pommel cap with a black leather wrapped grp. It is stamped only 1862 but has no anchor, P, USN, DR, U.S. Naval markings on the right side. The left side has Ames MFg Co Chicopee Mass. very faintly. It has no U.S. Naval stampings anywhere at all! It is in good & fairly well used condition with the blade still shiny with light pitting here & there & the 1862 stamp is clear & easy to see. The guard, side finger guard & pommel cap have a dark bronze patina & the finger guard has some battle damage from the Battle of sailor’s Creek, a dent from a sword strike. The black leather covered grip is well worn but completely intact without any cracks or gouges Sergeant Porter took this cutlass home with him when he was discharged on June 30, 1865. It was bought directly from the Porter family in 2007 & comes with a certificate of authenticity, a Porter family letter & historical research.
